Abstract

Gout arthritis is an inflammatory disease that causes joint pain so it requires effective management in addition to pharmacological therapy. This study aims to analyze the effect of progressive muscle relaxation on changes in joint pain in gout arthritis patients in the working area of the Dlanggu Mojokerto Health Center. The research used a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach. A sample of 83 respondents was selected using the purposive sampling technique. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the progressive muscle relaxation intervention for 10–15 minutes, once a day. Before the intervention, 97.6% of respondents experienced moderate pain, while after the intervention 51.8% experienced mild pain. The average pain score decreased from 5.19 to 3.59. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a value of Z = -8.147 with p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), which showed a significant effect of progressive muscle relaxation on the reduction of joint pain. This intervention can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy to accompany pharmacological therapy in reducing pain in gout arthritis patients in primary health services.
